A Note from our Music Director, Susan Suchard
Dear Rosedale Congregation,
We are all missing singing hymns on Sunday mornings and listening to the beautiful sounds of the organ. My friend, organist Matthew Larkin from Ottawa, has recorded these four Palm Sunday hymns for you to sing by yourself or with your families.
If you are craving more organ music, Matthew is playing live on his Facebook page every day. It’s a wonderful series. Look on Facebook for Matthew Larkin-Concert Organist and Conductor to listen.
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
(tune: Communion/Rockingham)
Instrumental verse
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God:
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.
See from his head, his hands, his feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
Ride On, Ride On in Majesty
(tune: Winchester New)
Introduction
Ride on, ride on in majesty!
Hark! all the tribes hosanna cry;
O Savior meek, pursue thy road
With palms and scattered garments strowed.
Ride on, ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die:
O Christ, thy triumphs now begin
O'er captive death and conquered sin.
Ride on, ride on in majesty!
The winged squadrons of the sky
Look down with sad and wond'ring eyes
To see th'approaching sacrifice.
Instrumental Verse
Ride on, ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die;
Bow your meek head to mortal pain,
Then take, O God, thy pow'r and reign.
All Glory, Laud and Honour
(tune: St. Theodulph)
Introduction
Refrain:
All glory, laud, and honour
To you, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.
You are the King of Israel
And David's royal Son,
Now in the Lord's name coming,
The King and Blessed One.
Refrain
The multitude of pilgrims
With palms before you went;
Our praise and prayer and anthems
Before you we present.
Refrain
Instrumental Verse
Refrain
To you before your passion
They sang their hymns of praise;
To you, now high exalted,
Our melody we raise.
Refrain
Their praises you accepted,
Accept the prayers we bring,
To you, now high exalted,
O good and gracious king.
Refrain
My Song is Love Unknown
(tune: Love Unknown)
Introduction
My song is love unknown,
my Saviour’s love to me,
love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be.
O who am I
that for my sake
my Lord should take frail flesh, and die?
He came from his blest throne
salvation to bestow,
but people scorned, and none the longed-for Christ would know.
But O my Friend,
my Friend indeed,
who at my need his life did spend.
Instrumental Verse
Sometimes they strew his way,
and his sweet praises sing,
resounding all the day hosannas to their King.
Then “Crucify!”
is all their breath,
and for his death they thirst and cry.
Instrumental Verse
Here might I stay and sing,
no story so divine;
never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine!
This is my friend,
in whose sweet praise
I all my days could gladly spend.
