Finding God In The Dark – Film Nights at Rosedale

Low key, entertaining, thought-provoking.   Again this fall we will be offering two series of film nights, four Thursdays in each session.

The format is simple :  we gather and the film begins, with little intro, at

7:00 pm sharp.   (very helpful to plan to be here early or on time please!).  We select films that run under two hours, and we leave time for 20-30 minutes of conversation after the film.

We are looking for glimpses of insight, meaning and spirit through the work of these artists, and our experience of their work.

The ‘Reel’ Jesus?

Matthew thinks Jesus is a great Teacher.

Luke thinks he is a radical socialist.

John says he is God.

Crossan thinks Jesus is a revolutionary.

Borg says he is a Healer and Spirit Person.

Harpur says he is  (just?) a myth.

Dawkins says “He ain’t necessarily so…”.

The Coen Brothers give us the Big Lebowski,

and Denys Arcand gives us Jesus of Montreal.

Yikes.

What do you think?

Come to a series to explore some ideas about Jesus.

Doug will be leading a series of 5 Thursday evenings in the new year, exploring some ways of understanding how people have understood Jesus, what the big questions still are, and, most importantly, what all of this might mean.

We’ll do this with some information (Doug will present some backgrounders), some conversation (lots of opportunity to share ideas and experiences) and a few movies, as part of the regular ‘Finding God in the Dark’ Film Nights.

Jan 28  -  Opening Session – ideas and conversation

Feb 4 -  Film 1  -  Godspell  – the 1973 adapation of the Broadway musical.   Very funky.

Feb 11  -  Film 2  -  Jesus of Montreal  – 1990 multiple award winner by Denys Arcand.

Feb 18– Film  3  -  One Hundred Nails  1997, Cannes, TIFF

Feb 25  -  Closing session, discussion,  reflection on movies.  (or we might add another movie at the end if we’re having fun!)

Important Notes – all at 7:00pm  – all of these sessions are designed so you can attend as many as you wish – they each work on their own, so don’t be afraid to come out even if you’ve missed the prior ones.

There may be other films on this theme worth seeing, and we may add some screening dates as we go – open to your suggestions!

It will be helpful if you register with Doug, or the church office.

All films shown upstairs in the Clark Hall Theatre, with high quality projection and superb surround-sound.  Mediocre Excellent popcorn is provided.
